A daily puzzle, at your pace

Learn nonograms with a 5×5 example

A nonogram number gives the length of a consecutive group of filled squares in that line. A clue of 3 means three squares touch; separate groups need at least one empty square between them.

01

Read a small 5×5 example

The clue for the second row is 3. A run of three can start in square 1, 2 or 3 of a five-square row. Compare those three placements: the middle square is filled in every one, so it is certain.

02

Cross-check the column clue

A square confirmed in a row must also fit its column clue. The middle column in this example has clue 5, so all five squares in that column are filled. Checking both directions helps you distinguish a deduction from a guess.

03

Use the same move in the game

Try filling the confirmed square on the lesson board. In the real game, choose ■ to fill or × to mark a known empty square. Select the same mark again to erase it. You do not need to mark every empty square; the filled squares must match the solution.

Try a move yourself

Check the middle square of row 2

Compare all ways to fit a run of 3 in five squares. Is the middle square filled or empty?
